Former World Rally Championship star and British Rally champion Alister McRae has been linked to a full-time return to the sport with Proton.

The Scot, who drove for Hyundai and Mitsubishi at the height of his WRC career, is believed to be in line for a drive in the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship in one of the all-new Proton Satria Neo S2000 cars built by British firm MEM. AUTOSPORT understands a new car, which McRae could drive, was delivered to the Proton factory in Shah Alam, Malaysia last week.

McRae, who dominated the British Rally Championship in 1995 and later became the first driver to score a fastest Group N time on a WRC round in an S2000 car, is tipped to start his campaign on the forthcoming Malaysia Rally in August and then compete with the Proton in Indonesia and China before a potential full programme in 2010.

“Alister has so much experience of Super 2000, it makes him the ideal choice for this seat,” a source told AUTOSPORT. “He’s also got an exceptional breadth of knowledge of developing new cars and driving them in this part [Asia-Pacific] of the world.

“We’ve seen what the Proton is capable of with Guy Wilks’ pace on Rally Russia [where he ran third and finished fifth] and for Alister, who is now based in Asia, it’s only a short trip to compete. And, let’s face it, he’s more than capable of winning these events.”

MEM declined to comment on the possibility of McRae competing with its Proton.
