Team Trophy for 2011 APRC

A new initiative for the 2011 Asia Pacific Rally Championship, ‘The APRC Team’s Trophy’ has attracted a lot of interest from new and established teams.   “Any registered team can enter, but the really interesting addition is the ability to enter a ‘one-off’ driver to score team points only, provided that driver registers with the FIA and pays the necessary fee. As an example, assuming you had a 3 car team at each event, you could have 2 APRC registered drivers and could introduce a different driver at each event for your 3rd car and he/she would score team points only”, said APRC coordinator Murray Brown. “There has been a lot of interest so far from established APRC teams that see the opportunity to win the Team Trophy and at the same time bolster the number of entries. We could see some high-profile or specialist drivers at one or two events”.

With the addition of the trophy, there is now a variety of options for competitors wanting to enter the APRC. The top level is a fully registered competitor who must enter all six events, followed by the option to enter three rounds in either region and compete for the Pacific or Asia Cup. One-off wildcard entries were a popular addition for 2010 an initiative that enabled 17 new competitors the opportunity to compete at an international level. If there was an award for the highest placed wild-cards, on top of the podium would be kiwi Haydon Paddon who won Rally Whangarei. Second place goes to Australian Glen Raymond who was second at Rally Queensland and third spot Wei Hongjie 3rd at China Rally.

Next month the APRC will announce plans for a Junior trophy expected to be for drivers under 28 years in 2WD Group N2 (1600cc) cars. Four rounds are proposed and likely to be Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and J
