Challengers Arrive for 2024 APRC Title

A total of 12 teams are vying for the overall FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) title, set to be decided this weekend at New Zealand’s International Rally of Whangārei from 8-10 November 2024.

This all-in championship decider brings together a diverse lineup of competitors from across the Asia-Pacific region. Eight teams from New Zealand are joined by two from Japan, one from India, and one from Indonesia. All contenders enter the final round with equal point-scoring potential, creating an exciting “winner-takes-all” scenario. This unique event marks the first time in history that the FIA APRC title will be awarded on New Zealand soil, adding a historic element to the weekend’s competition.

Competitors will tackle 237 kilometres of Northland New Zealand’s renowned gravel roads, celebrated by drivers from past World Rally Championship (WRC) events. The route, characterised by fast, flowing sections, is well known for its high cambered corners that reward committed and experienced drivers.

Leading the charge is 2022 APRC champion and newly re-crowned European Rally Champion (ERC) Hayden Paddon from New Zealand. He will be joined by countryman Jared Hudson in the Hyundai i20N Rally2 car – the same car that won the 2023 event. Paddon is eyeing the challenge of winning two FIA titles in the same year.

Following behind, with an equal shot at the 2024 championship, are teams with equally capable machinery. Starting fifth is 2009 APRC runner-up Emma Gilmour with co-driver Malcolm Read in a Citroën C3 Rally2. “I’ve always enjoyed the Rally Whangārei stages and have had some strong results here in the past,” said Gilmour.

Starting eighth is Indonesia’s H. Rihans Variza and co-driver Mochamad Fahrezi Fadh in a Škoda Fabia Rally2, who won the North Sumatra round of the APRC qualifying events. In 12th and returning to New Zealand are Japanese pairing Masatoshi Konishi and Kazuto Suzuki in a Toyota GR Yaris. The field includes a mix of two- and four-wheel-drive cars.

Following Friday night’s ceremonial start in central Whangārei, the competitive tests begin Saturday morning. A total of 129km of competitive gravel roads will take teams north of Whangārei for a repeat loop of four stages, ending with back-to-back runs of the Pohe Island Super Special Stage, adjacent to the Service Park.

Sunday’s concluding 108km will cover roads south of the city, featuring a repeat of two stages and three visits to the 16.40km Waiotira road section.

The rally will culminate with a ceremonial finish at Whangārei’s Pohe Island on Sunday afternoon from 3:30pm, where the new APRC champion will be crowned. The podium celebrations will also honour the Pacific Cup winners. Kiwi pairing Jack Hawkeswood and co-driver Jason Farmer hold a six-point advantage, with five other teams in contention.
In addition to the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship title, winners will receive NZ$5,000 from the APRC Working Group, with NZ$3,000 awarded to second place and NZ$2,000 to third.
